While urea production is common, many parts of the process are hazardous and require sound safety infrastructure. It is also common for safety professionals and process owners to regularly review and revise standard safety practices. In 2015, an additional safety measure was recommended to prevent backflow into Koch Ag and Energy Solutions Fort Dodge’s (KAES) compressors. This additional layer of protection could be accomplished by assuring that the safety shutoff valves had bidirectional shutoff. KAES consulted with their Emerson Impact Partner, Stover Controls, and learned that the Fisher™ Z500 valve and Bettis™ G-series actuator provided the necessary shutoff and met site specifications, so they were selected for the Ammonia and carbon dioxide safety system compressor.
